Jose A.’s Story

It was a Sunday and I was returning back to town from the beach. I was a passenger in the car with a few friends. We got into an accident where we ended up hitting a tree. I remember calling for help and waiting for someone to come get me out of the car. It was so scary. The next thing I remember, I woke up in the hospital and the doctors had already operated on my neck and I was intubated. They told me I had injured my cervical spinal cord in the accident. All the other people in the car were uninjured. My only family in town was my brother. My children and sister were in North Carolina. So, I moved here to be closer to them. I am very motivated to get back to work as soon as I am able. I want to provide for my family. I had to learn how to talk, breathe on my own, and learn how to be independent but in my wheelchair. Before my accident, I would love to play soccer. I hope to walk again and play soccer with my children.

This grant would help me do more therapy. I am not able to work right now and I want to get back as soon as I can. I didn’t know something like this was going to happen and I need this grant because I will not be afford more therapy on my own.
