Malcolm D.’s Story
When I was 17 years old, I made a desperate mistake that changed my life forever.
When I was 17 years old, I made a desperate mistake that changed my life forever. I was trying to do what a desperate person would do, and it led to me being shot four times. Two of the bullets hit my spinal cord, causing a severe injury. I was rushed to Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, where I stayed for initial treatment and stabilization. After that, I was transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, where I spent months recovering and undergoing intensive care. From February 9 to May 6, I was in the hospital, fighting to stabilize my condition and start my journey toward recovery. Since then, I’ve been relentlessly working on my rehabilitation. Physical therapy has become a significant part of my life, and I push myself every day to regain as much strength and mobility as possible. The journey is tough, but I’m determined to overcome this injury and improve my quality of life. Every session of therapy is a step towards my goal, and I remain hopeful and committed to making progress.
In my family, we are constantly juggling school and other responsibilities, and my mom is a single mother of five kids. The We Win grant will provide us with twelve sessions that are incredibly valuable. These sessions will give us the much-needed time to find more money and save up, which is crucial for our family’s stability and future. Managing everything on my mom’s own is challenging, and this grant will offer us some relief and support during this tough time. These twelve sessions mean everything to us because they represent an opportunity to catch up and get ahead. With the extra time and resources provided by the grant, my mom can focus on finding additional financial support and ensuring that we have what we need to succeed. It’s not just about the financial help; it’s also about the hope and security that come with knowing we have a bit of a safety net. This grant will make a significant difference in our lives, allowing us to breathe a little easier and work towards a better future.
